According to legend, the original Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were developed from two Newfoundland-type dogs. Certainly other retrievers were brought into the mix, giving them not only their fondness for diving into puddles, pools, ponds and lakes, but for bringing back game with gusto, no matter what the weather. This hardy dog is still a favorite with hunters for her common sense and workability.
This dog is determined and often single-minded. Owners need to gain control from the moment the pup is brought home. It's helpful to keep the Chessie challenged and busy with daily work and play sessions. She'll protect the house, family and property, so introductions to regular visitors – friends, delivery drivers, and neighbors - are important.
For camouflage purposes, Chessies are supposed to be the color of dead grass or sedge, which means any shade of straw/tan/brown/reddish brown. The wavy coat has a natural oil and is thick with a woolly undercoat to protect them while working in ice, snow or frigid waters. Their breed standard says “A Chesapeake's coat should resist water in the same way that a duck's feathers do.” The coat on the head is smoother than that on the body.
Gaining the upper hand and doing it in a positive way are the keys to winning a Chessie's heart and respect. Regular workouts well into adulthood willreinforce the bond between owner and pet.

Parents should be OFA and CERF certified as hip and elbow problems are seen.
